The Field Station Project 2020
In September 2022, Alubox, The IK Foundation, The University of Iceland, and the Embassy of Sweden in Iceland launched an innovative autonomous research station, Solander’s Eye, on Breiðamerkursandur at Jökulnes.
This remote station is designed to monitor the local biosphere, including wildlife, weather, vegetation, and the atmosphere, for up to a year without human interference. Situated in the pristine wilderness of Vatnajökull National Park, the area was once covered by the Vatnajökull glacier. The project continues the scientific legacy of Daniel Solander, aiming to gather vast amounts of data to deepen our understanding of this unique environment and support ecological sustainability.
